Animal love You have a better relationship with your dog than your boyfriend. If you were stranded on a desert island and could take one person with you, youd take your cat.
Healthy workplace friendships focus on professional goals We all need help from others in order to achieve our professional goals and objectives. In order to receive help from others, we need to develop healthy and productive working relationships, and sometimes these working relationships might evolve into friendships. With these thoughts in mind, what are ways in which a workplace friendship can be an asset? For starters, anytime you help someone, especially when they are in need, you gain another person likely to help you when in need. The more friendships you cultivate, the easier it will be for you to achieve your goals and objectives. Secondly, when internal corporate political matters arise, as they always do, you have more advocates and protectors on your side.

Where do I stand?” That is a question most employees want answered on a regular basis. Unfortunately for many, it is one that some supervising managers handle only once a year in a perfunctory, fill-in-the-required-form sort of way, or, even worse, never handle at all.Planning can take the pain out of appraisals. It will also cause the manager to realize that the question “how am I doing?” is not one, but two:

It offers a dreamlike quality and can be artistically rewarding. The film available does not provide as many choices as other mediums and the film must be handled more carefully, as well. There are many things to be considered using this type of film and these are clearly discussed throughout the book. This is fast becoming the new and unique method for wedding photography and should be considered and explored by anyone involved in this type of photography.

Swimming pools If any designer or specifier, owner or operator of a swimming pool wishes to know almost anything on the subject which is not covered in the book, the extensive reading lists provide authoritative guidance on where this may be found. Having worked with the author for some years in the Advisory Division of the Cement and Concrete Association, I am not surprised to find the meticulous care taken in providing important details on many aspects of pool planning, design and construction. Swimming pools have to function in an environment aggressive to many of the materials used in their construction and the text provides guidance on avoiding potential problems. The majority of pools have a basic reinforced concrete structure built below ground which, externally, is subject to earth and water pressure and is liable to attack from aggressive ground conditions. Detailed guidance is not provided on reinforced concrete design but pointers to references on design are listed and factors affecting the durability of reinforced concrete are presented in some detail.
Swimming PoolIn the design and manufacturing of pre-fabricated aboveground pools, the cost of fabrication continues to be a major concern. Pools have to be manufactured in a variety of styles and sizes to accommodate the available space requirements of the customer and the variety of components necessary for manufacturing is quite large. Designs that can incorporate this flexibility and reduce the necessary inventory required to accommodate a variety of sizes and structures have begun to arrive in the above ground swimming pool manufacturing marketplace creating easier systems to erect without sacrificing stability.

THE FINAL vacation days of summer are rapidly approaching. Traveling with pets can be great fun, but if your dog or cat hates to travel, the trip could be your worst nightmare, and hers, too. What arrangements do you need to make? Some dogs and cats do perfectly well in a boarding facility, while others do better when they stay in their own home. For a pet who will stay at home, a reliable friend or family member who can sleep over in your home is best for a dog. A cat will be OK alone for a short time with someone regularly visiting to give her food, water and some human companionship. If you dont have a friend or family member who can come do this for you, numerous bonded and insured pet sitting services are available.
The Lying Game James W. Loewen, a guy obsessed with the dissemination of misinformation (”Lies My Teacher Told Me”) is back with “Lies Across America: What Our Historic Sites Get Wrong” (Touchstone, $15). Its not precisely a travel guide, but its a good guide for travelers who visit historic sites. Did you know the Traditional Lincoln Birthplace Cabin in Kentucky is a composite of several old cabins, none of which are where the late great president was born? Some examples he gives are lies by omission, others an attempt to be politically correct - but inaccuracies are rife, nonetheless.

Most sectors of these four transportation industries–airlines, trucking, railroads and water transport–should respond to improved economic conditions with modest gains in 1993. In the airline industry, more carriers could merge or face bankruptcy, depending on the economy and on whether destructive fare wars persist; long-term prospects, however, particularly in international services, are for moderate to strong growth. Trucking company rates will remain under intense competitive pressure; major carriers will continue a trend toward seeking profits from expedited deliveries in short-haul markets. Rail freight traffic is expected to increase about 3 percent in 1993, and Amtrak passenger-miles to rise 7 percent. U.S.-flag ships in international commerce face stiff competition from foreign vessels, but U.S. domestic and inland shipping could benefit from recoveries in the steel, construction, automotive and other basic industries. Before reading this chapter, please see “How to Get the Most Out of This Book” on page 1. It will clarify questions you may have concerning data collection procedures, factors affecting trade data, forecasting methodology, the use of constant dollars, the difference between industry and product data, sources and references, and the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. For other topics related to this chapter, see chapter 20 (Aerospace), 21 (Shipbuilding and Repair), and 35 (Motor Vehicles and Parts). Through the first half of fiscal year 1992, 37 U.S. airlines representing 98.9 percent of the industry reported $1.8 billion in operating losses. This followed record financial losses by the industry of nearly $4 billion for the full fiscal year (FY) 1991. Despite these large losses, traffic rebounded somewhat in the international market, up 20.4 percent for the first six months of FY1992. However, the broad economic recovery that was expected to help turn the entire industry around failed to materialize. Instead, deep fare reductions introduced in the early part of 1992 made an already bad financial situation even worse.
AIRLINES In 1990 and 1991, the U.S. airline industry suffered large financial losses. The industrys poor financial performance was the result of several factors, the most important being the recession, higher fuel prices, the adverse effect of the Persian Gulf conflict on international air travel and rising debt service costs. During 1990 and 1991, the Persian Gulf conflict required the first activation of the Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) program since it was established in 1952. Under the program, the Department of Defense may requisition previously contracted passenger and cargo aircraft from commercial air carriers to augment the militarys own airlift capacity. The airline industry responded rapidly to aid the military build up in the Persian Gulf. By July 15, 1991, commercial aircraft had flown over 5,315 missions, and delivered 690,150 troops and 228,400 tons of material in support of military requirements.

LOAN PROPOSALSPreparing a solid loan proposal can be very time consuming, but it has proven to be the best way for a small business owner to demonstrate his or her understanding of the business and its financial demands to potential lenders and investors. Furthermore, the business plan portion of the loan proposal can serve as a sort of handbook for running the business. It presents criteria against which managements strategy and decisions can be continually evaluated. Overall, a formal loan proposal should illustrate why the small business is a good credit risk by placing it within the context of its market and competition, explaining any peaks and valleys in cash flow, and emphasizing the strengths of the management team.

Q: have a great job, great friends and a terrific husband and home, but I still feel a void in my life, like I need a change. What can I do to figure out what is missing? Los Angeles-based life coach Beth Rothenberg offers these suggestions: That something is different for all of us at different times in our lives. Some find it through meditation or yoga, some in journal writing, nature or religion. For others it means finding a purpose, doing something that benefits others. Finding your passion — something you love so much, you cant wait to get up in the morning — will help make you feel complete.
At prenatal classes, expert nurses inform you of what to expect. Each stage of labour, along with the emotions involved, is outlined. The labour at the beginning of life. Sure as taxes, the pain will come. Life is proceeding as it should. There is a beginning and a progression. Just around the stage called transition is the hardest part, the pressure, the wish to stop or the choice to push forward. They may tell you not to push. You may hold back, against gravity, and against Mother Nature. Resisting. We have an opportunity to start in pre-dialysis clinics. We teach. We support. We try to maximize understanding and optimize good health. End stage renal failure will come. Planning for this phase can be as natural as planning any life event. Then there is the labour of beginning treatment. A patient and family undergo major shifts in lifestyle. Crises come and, hopefully, dissipate.

WHAT IS GRAPHIC DESIGN FOR? STEP contributor Alice Twemlow just comes right out with it and poses this interesting question in her newly released book-an ambitious task, to say the least. Beginning with an outright list of the roles of graphic design, Twemlow puts to rest any fears that this profession is a useless one: “Its for selling things and ideas to make money or to further political agendas. But then you realize its also for critiquing such behaviors. Its for making things clear-saving lives even-but its also for enriching our everyday lives through the addition of layers of complexity, nuance, and sublety. Its for helping people find their way and to comprehend data, but its also for helping them to get lost in new ideas, fantastical narratives or landscapes, and to question and contest what information is presented. Graphic design is enmeshed within all aspects of social life. From the signs that tell car drivers to stop at intersections and the nutrition label that clearly shows a consumer how much cholesterol is contained in a piece of food to the title sequence that graphically encapsulates the atmosphere and themes of a movie to speed the viewers suspension of belief-it is the sheer diversity and pervasiveness of graphic designs products and outcomes-as well as their inherent contradictions-that resists their being corralled into a list for analysis.”
Green, 32, says his work doesnt have a signature style, but often includes “cartoonish” elements and tongue-in-cheek humor. “People say they can identify a consistent something in my work - theyll say that looks like your stuff - but then they cant quite put their finger on it,” he says. He cites tattoos as an inspiration, which is reflected in the way he uses illustrations as an integrated part of graphics, rather than something that is merely added on. In addition to print, Web projects and packaging, Green is moving into work on environmental graphics - in this case wall murals, as well as logos and signage - for a new bowling alley that is about to open in Jeffersontown. He also designed props and graphics for the locally made feature film Keep Your Distance.

Unwanted mobile phones can be recycled into as much as L30 each by Help the Aged to help older people. The average mobile phone is replaced every 18 months amounting to 15 million phones being made redundant every year. If your place of work is throwing away junk accumulated since the last office spring clean make sure old and unwanted mobile phones are not trashed with the rest of the garbage. Hilary Birch, recycling account manager at Help the Aged says: “If we got only a pound for every phone made redundant in 2002 alone, it would mean a very conservative L15 million to help further our work. Of course not everyone knows how valuable junk can be to us and this is why we are raising awareness through the `Ring in Spring appeal.”

Thanks to a pharmacological breakthrough, The “polypill” will soon be with us. Combining six different heart medications in one supercharged tablet, its the latest in a line of pharmaceutical attempts to banish heart disease. What a sad indictment of our attitude to health that we could consider such mass medication as a solution for a health epidemic whose causes are clearly apparent and could be virtually eradicated through education and personal responsibility. The Western “cardiovascular crisis” could be consigned to history with a change in attitude and a willingness to implement what we already know. Why wait for the polypill when you can make a real difference to your heart health, starting today. When it comes to preventing a heart attack or stroke, little changes will cumulatively pay big dividends.

As part of a project to educate homeowners on making their homes more energy-efficient, one Oklahoma City couple volunteered their house for a thorough inspection Wednesday to determine how much energy it was wasting and what they can do about it. Sustainable OKC, the local branch of the Oklahoma Sustainability Network, and Guaranteed Watt Saver worked out an arrangement where GWS will inspect four houses for free and present their findings at the groups sustainability conference in April. After about an hour-long inspection, Parker and Curtis Maxwell, GWSs Oklahoma operational manager, determined the 1,517-square- foot home wasnt in that bad of shape when it came to energy loss.
Buying a home is often the largest purchase decision a person will make. It is therefore not surprising that the use of home inspectors is increasing as buyers seek to confirm the physical condition of their purchases. Home inspectors, however, have often been referred to as “deal killers” by real estate licensees because they have, on occasion, been responsible for stopping a sale of residential real estate that would have otherwise been completed. More recently, however, licensees are viewing home inspections somewhat differently. Instead of perceiving home inspectors as a potential source of reducing a real estate licensees income, licensees are viewing them as a way to increase future sales and reduce potential liability on the buyer side of the transaction. This study examines the role that home inspections play in the residential real estate home buying process. To date, no study has considered this impact on the sales process. Furthermore, the performance, process and other characteristics of those sales agents that have been involved with a home inspection in the residential sales process are unknown.

Why has no-one come up with an Insurance Broker” logo before now? The Insurance Brokers Registration Council has never done so; nor for that matter, have the broker trade associations. Yet it seems blindingly obvious that, if you want to portray your professional services to the buying public, then a widely recognised logo would be one valuable way of promoting those services. Mr Paddick expressed that view at a press conference to launch the “Institute Registered Insurance Broker” logo (see Late Extra on page 2) and the campaign to get it widely recognised. Of course, in the current climate of jockeying for position between IIB and the General Insurance Standards Council for who regulates whom among general insurance intermediaries, the IIBs new logo is not just about promoting an insurance brokers service.
Definition is a part of every business, whether its defining your product or service, market or advertising strategy. But combining all that defines your business into a concise visual message - your company logo - is one of the most challenging tasks youll face.A logo has to sum up your business in one small statement, says Kevin Daniels, a designer for text image, a Huntington Beach, California, graphic design firm. When designing a logo for your company, follow the guidelines suggested by Daniels: * Begin the design process by brainstorming. With the flurry of interest in the retail cash forex market, futures traders might not understand the various differences to the futures products. Here we highlight distinctions between forex cash and futures markets from a trading technique perspective. Forex trading is considered the juggernaut in the investment world with more than $3.5 trillion in currency trading taking place per day, according to the Bank for International Settlement. There is more daily volume in the forex market than in all of the U.S. stock or futures markets combined. It used to be, only very large players could participate in these markets. If small traders wanted to speculate on fluctuating exchange rates, their only option was forex futures. The maturation of the retail cash markets have not made forex futures obsolete, though. Quite the contrary, volume in forex futures traded electronically at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange is shattering records. Sometimes, similar markets compete and suck volume away from each other; other times, similar markets play complimentary roles, as spread and arbitrage strategies allow one market to feed off another. The continued success of forex futures is evidence that cash forex and forex futures fall into the latter category.
FRAUD BUSTER BUSTED? The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) continues to aggressively target fraud cases involving forex dealers despite a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit that brings the regulators jurisdiction over forex into question. While the retail forex world typically refers to its products as spot and forwards, forex brokers lined up to register with the CFTC, the futures industry regulator, after the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000 codified the CFTCs forex oversight.

BradyGIo photoluminescent products were developed to exceed the requirements of NYC Local Law 26 and to meet the installation and durability needs of building owners, managers and maintenance professionals. NYC Local Law 26 was passed after the events of September 11, 2001, to increase tenant safety in high-rise buildings. The law requires that all commercial Class E buildings more than 75 feet tall install photoluminescent exit path markings by July 1, 2006. The cost of digital cameras largely depends on whether they have been designed for consumer or professional use. The consumer cameras have non interchangeable lenses, either fixed focal length or zoom. Professional cameras have the ability to accept interchangeable lenses and many will accept lenses that were originally intended for cameras using film.

Southwestern Bell is hoping to meet the needs of small and home- based businesses with a new product designed to allow customers to use their computers like a telephone. The company Tuesday announced it has launched its new software, PC Phone Manager, in Oklahoma to offer its customers a way to integrate computers and telephone service. This marks the companys entry into the growing computer telephony integration market — an industry expected to account for $3.3 billion in 1996, according to Rick Wilson, product manager for Southwestern Bell.
Computer Software SecurityComputer software security refers to the use of software to prevent damage to computer files, programs, and operating systems, as well as to monitor a personal computer (PC) or laptop for theft.

Computer security researcher Steve Gibson is seen in his home office in Laguna Hills, California, in April, 2002. Two years prior, Gibson was testing intrusion-detection software when he suddenly found a program running on his computer that he had unknowingly installed. The hidden program secretly tagged along with another program and monitored his Internet habits. AP/WIDE WORLD PHOTOS .

If you opt for plastic surgery, it is vital to do your homework beforehand. Find a qualified consultant who will truthfully explain the pros and cons (see below). The surgery involves a general anaesthetic and will cause bruising, swelling, numbness and stiffness for at least l4 days. Rarely, a patient will suffer permanent numbness or a lopsided smile. The operation costs between pounds 3,000 and pounds 10,000. Other surgery on the face may include liposuction to tackle a double chin, drooping eyelids or sagging eyebrows; laser or chemical treatment to iron out facial creases, and redraping the skin under the eye to avoid “bags”. A brow lift costs pounds 2,000-pounds 3,000; tightening the upper or lower eyelids is likely to set you back at least pounds 1,000. Non-surgical treatments are also available: botulinum toxin can be injected every three months to eliminate frown lines (pounds 150 a time) but may temporarily cause drooping eyebrow. Dermabrasion - sanding away the top level of skin - or a chemical peel will remove scars and skin creases (pounds 200-pounds 400), but the skin may scar and be left sensitive to sun. Laser treatment, increasingly used as an alternative to these, costs at least pounds 500. Collagen, a protein, can be injected to fill deep nose-to-mouth grooves or “plump up” the lips. Two or three treatments may be needed and they last only three to six months; there is also a risk of allergic reaction. It costs pounds 110 for an initial consultation, plus pounds 250 per injection. l Breasts: an uplift operation, or mastopexy, will reposition the nipple and reduce the amount of skin without increasing size. It can lead to reduced nipple sensation. The cost is around pounds 3,500. To increase size, an implant is needed; breast reduction involves moving the nipple up and removing the lower part of the breast. l Stomach: a “tummy tuck”, or abdominoplasty, involves cutting above the pubic area. Fat is removed by liposuction, the muscles of the abdomen are stitched tightly, then the skin is pulled down and the excess removed. It costs pounds 2,500-pounds 3,000, and can lead to permanent numbness. l Hips: liposuction is used to remove “love handles” - fatty bits on the sides of the hips - though the procedure is still regarded as dubious; some deaths have been reported from severe blood loss. A tiny tube is inserted and the fat is sucked out. The cost of the operation is between pounds 1,000 and pounds 4,500. There is a risk of uneven fat removal, and the skin failing to contract. l To find a good cosmetic surgeon, contact The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons at 35 Lincolns Inn Fields, London, WC2A 3PN (0171-405 2234); send a large sae and they will provide a list of members. To find out whether a surgeon is qualified in plastic surgery, call the General Medical Council (0171-580 7642). The British Association of Cosmetic Surgeons (0171-323 5728) represents mainly surgeons in private clinics; they may not be qualified plastic surgeons, but are possibly more practised in certain techniques

Corporate team building

July 29th, 2008

WINTER IS here, I can tell. Since the end of October, everyone seems to be talking about “team-building”. People talk with a new vigour and determination to “really make things work this time”. One option often advocated to resolve the team-building conundrum is what is euphemistically described (for trade- mark reasons) as “working in challenging environments” or “working outside”. The argument goes that managers have to work in a constantly challenging and changing environment they need to be able to respond quickly; so, put them in an unfamiliar environment with unfamiliar challenges and they can learn from their experiences - “using transferable skills”. This was recently described to me by an eminent banking client as “going to the Lake District to bite the heads off rabbits”. Just because the England football team and the Shadow Cabinet have done it, does not mean it works. If an organisation has deep-seated problems then how will making managers pump high levels of adrenaline around their bodies for a long weekend help their overall performance? And what about the poor soul who feels that the whole experience is bordering on bullying or totally irrelevant to their ability to sell laptop computers in the Milton Keynes regional network? Some team-building programmes do not seem to cover the basics - to manage the team effectively you need to understand: the significance of “the team”; the power of a “self-managing team”; what makes the team “effective”; how to achieve “good teamwork”; how to analyse and review team performance, and how to put your learning into practice. To build a team you need to establish some sense of urgency and direction; set performance related tasks and goals; get people to work together and build networks; do not emphasise hierarchies. Do not confuse the sizzle with the steak. Robert Craven is Associate Fellow at Warwick Business School, Visiting Professor at Toulouse Business School and Managing Director of The Directors Centre.
Team building is popular with most companies management and has been so for the past few years, as evidenced Dilbert. Its not actually easy to build a team using team-building activities. Cynicism aside, it does happen like that sometimes, and anyone whos been part of it knows it can be wonderful. The trouble is, you simply cant summons up a successful project. Management, consultants, and trainers think you can generate strong team feelings with a simulated project or a social event. Its worth a try, but far from easy to come up with a team-building event that doesnt cause more trouble than it solves. For example, picture Dilbert, Tina, Alice, and the gang accidentally feeding a teammate to a bear.
Building a sense of camaraderie, trust and surt among the members of your team can be crucial to the teams success. We have experienced success in our mens swimming program at Golden West Community College. While it may be difficult to describe the “pieces of the puzzle” of our success, I strongly advocate one of the components of this puzzle: team camaraderie. The community college (junior college) system presents added barriers each year in building team spirit because we annually lose 50 percent or more of our team to graduation and/or attrition. This means that every year, roughly half of our team is comprised of new faces and personalities (often from around the world) who bring a diversity of beliefs and cultures together for the first time.

Presentation Products

July 29th, 2008

When making a presentation, sometimes the tools you use can be as important as the information youre trying to convey. A visual presentation allows the audience to see and experience the information in a way that pure verbal communication never could. Today, with the plethora (thats right, I used the word plethora) of presentation tools available, your next sales pitch or employee training meeting can be more professional and your task of persuasion more easily accomplished. Here are a few products to help you get started on your quest for the perfect presentation. Designed for small-group presentations, Canons latest and lightest projector provides 1,100 ANSI lumens for a bright picture and can project a 200-inch image at 85 percent brightness. With a design that limits fan noise, the projector is quiet, allowing your audience to view your presentation undistracted. At a weight of six pounds, the LV-Xi is easy to move around-a necessary feature for the car-crowded road warrior. This projector is Mac and PC friendly, and it can handle and display formats of both digital and video files. The LV-Xi also comes with a handy little remote control that enables the presenter to hop and dance around persuasively anywhere in the room. “Canon technology in lenses and portability allows our customers to display the best images in any room, under any lighting condition, to provide the audience with a better viewing experience and to help users enhance their presentations,” says Yukiaki Hashimoto of Canons Photographic Products Group.
Direct Marketing Products, Inc. (DMP) is holding a “Premier Products Expo”
for three days in October on the 15th, 16th and 17th, at their corporate
office in Costa Mesa, California.

The company is requesting interested individuals to send a detailed
description of the product, along with a brief summary and photos,
sketches, DVDs and/or any other supporting information that will best
present the idea.

Home Based Business

July 29th, 2008

LOS ANGELES — The home video business, a lucrative source of profits for Hollywood studios, has been stuck on pause this year. “The home video business is not going away but were entering an era where we wont see a store on every corner,” said Brian Eisenbarth, an analyst with Collins Co. “There are a lot of stores that wont make it out of this period of consolidation.” Rentals in the video business fell 7 percent in the first six months of this year, while sales of videos — dubbed “sell-through” - - declined as much as 4 percent after posting double-digit growth in recent years. Combined sales of the top 10 titles fell a whopping 27 percent from the same period last year. The centerpiece of the problem is Blockbuster Entertainment, a subsidiary of New York-based Viacom, which also owns Paramount Studios, and the MTV and Nickelodeon cable channels. The shaky state of the video business was highlighted last week when Viacom reported dismal second quarter results, taking a $323 million pretax charge to fix problems at Blockbuster Entertainment. Cash flow for its video stores, responsible for between a fifth and a quarter of the nations video business, fell a stunning 47.4 percent to $90.1 million from $171.3 million in the 1996 quarter. Analysts note that other video retail chains such as Video Update, Moovies and West Coast also have performed poorly this year. “The problems in the business are not unique to Blockbuster,” Eisenbarth said. Some of this years decline resulted from studios releasing most top 1996 products such as Independence Day late last year, leaving few attractive new titles for retailers to offer so far this year. Additionally, the second half of the year is far more important than the first half since it traditionally produces between 60 percent and 70 percent of the industrys annual revenues. Tom Adams, head of Carmel-based Adams Media Research, predicts rentals and sell-through will pick up by the end of the year but he also recently cut his forecast for 1997s year-to-year gain from 15 percent to 10 percent. That means the video industrys domestic rentals will be about flat at $9.1 billion, and should wind up rising to about $8 billion from $7.2 billion in sell-through. Adams estimates sell-through revenues jumped 14 percent last year. (Estimates of revenues in the video industry are uneven because only about a third of the nations 50,000 retail outlets are chain operations while the rest are independents which dont report sales.) “Theres not any glacial change in the overall business but the first half of this year was pretty soft,” said analyst Curt Alexander of Media Research Group. “With no increase of VCR households or prices, its essentially a hit-driven business.” The poor performance of home video has come even though potentially competitive new technologies — satellite TV, digital versatile disc and digital cable — have not started to eat into home videos domain and wont for a few more years. “Everyone has been worried since 1989 about video going away, and then everyone realizes that were still years away from widespread video on demand,” Adams said. Most major summer movies except for Disneys Hercules will be out by the end of the year. The top contenders — Warner Bros. Batman Robin on Oct. 21; Universals The Lost World: Jurassic Park on Nov. 4; Sonys Men In Black, widely expected out before the end of the year; Disneys Oct. 14 re-issue of The Jungle Book and a Nov. 11 release of its made-for-video Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas. Despite the doom and gloom, its worth noting that combined rental and sell-through revenues are now double their 1989 level, mostly because consumers decided to start collecting videos, particularly those that would entertain children. Thats where future growth will come since rentals have hit the saturation point and gone as high as theyll go in the U.S. market. “The rental industry will never have another year of double-digit growth,” Adams said. “Rental has peaked and will be flat for a few years and then start to decline.”
An increasing number of people around the East Bay choose to launch their own business as a second career, often running them out of their homes. However, many say they dont really know what they are doing. “When you work from home, you dont have people to bounce ideas off of,” said Dan Stone, who launched the Web marketing service 360village.com after a career in urban planning. “(Theres) no quick feedback or access to other resources that you have in a traditional working environment.” The city of Pleasant Hill, where a whopping 28 percent of businesses are home-based, has organized a conference to help aspiring entrepreneurs.

Travelocity Poll Shows Divide between Changing Travel Environment and Consumer Expectations Travelocitys poll of more than 1,300 travelers shows consumer expectations are often out of line with airline policies when something goes wrong. When asked what they considered an excessive amount of time to be held up on the tarmac, 55 percent said 30 minutes would be excessive; the vast majority (95 percent) after waiting an hour, but only a few airlines make any promise of compensation for grounded flights - and then only after several hours. The vast majority of respondents also expect some type of reimbursement when more than a two-hour delay or cancellation occurs, an expectation thats often not met by the airlines, especially in the case of winter weather.

Colorado Springs-area home construction continued its blistering pace in the first quarter, although one economist fears an oversupply could drive down prices in the next few years. Single-family home building permits totaled 1,392 from January through March — a 20.2 percent jump from the same period last year, according to figures released Friday by the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department. The number of permits this year puts Colorado Springs and El Paso County on pace to shatter the record of 5,059 single-family permits, set only last year.

WASHINGTON — Construction of new homes and apartments plunged by 17.6 percent in March, the biggest decline in 14 years and another possible indication that rising interest rates are beginning to take a toll on the economy. Meanwhile, wholesale inflation shot up 0.7 percent as energy prices soared. The Commerce Department reported Tuesday that builders started construction on new homes and apartments at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.84 million units in March, down from 2.23 million units in February. “This is a bit of a shocker,” said David Seiders, chief economist for the National Association of Home Builders. “But I dont think this represents a fundamental downshift in the housing market. There were special factors behind it.”

The future state of manufacturing in the United States cant be predicted with spot-on accuracy. One can presume, though, that manufacturers and machine shops will continue to face tough international competition from countries using low-wage labor. For 25 years, Dr. Lenz has specialized in the design and operation of machine cells, ranging from flexible labor U-line operations to flexible manufacturing systems (FMS). The days of buying machines to produce one or two part numbers are gone, according to Dr. Lenz. Rather, shops will want the capability to run a high variety of part numbers across the same set of machine tools. He also believes that through the effective management of such flexible capacity, there is no reason why high-precision parts that require high-end machinery should not be produced in the country where they are consumed. During a presentation at Mazaks U.S. headquarters in Florence, Kentucky, Dr. Lenz touched on some alternate business tools that aggressive U.S. manufacturers may use to survive global competition. Here are a few. 1. Effectively manage flexible capacity. It wont be enough for shops to use robots to tend machine tools and perform other automated duties. In fact, much flexible capacity has already been installed in the United States, but the cost savings have not been as pronounced as expected. Thats primarily a result of ineffective management of that flexible equipment.
Employees arent the only ones who need protecting in the event of a major disaster. Data and equipment critical to a business operations should be backed up and protected if businesses hope to be back up and running quickly, or at all. Forty-four percent of businesses that lose their data in a disaster never open their doors again. Some firms place their primary production. equipment, including large servers, in secure data centers. Many companies do not have the space or appropriate environmental controls, such as cooling capabilities and power sources, to support their necessary equipment. “If the servers dont have the proper type of cooling, theyll melt down within hours,” said Todd Hallstrom, manager and sales engineer with Denver-based ViaWest, which operates two data centers in Utah.
In baseballs game of survival, its not about who can stay on the island longest; its about who can get to the island. Eight teams eventually will reach the postseason, and given the way the races have been unfolding, the winners–most of them, anyway–wont be determined until the end of the regular season on October 2. Before embarking on the last leg of any journey, its wise to check on the state of the traveling parties. Assuming the Cardinals, White Sox and Braves have all but locked up their berths in the postseason, were left with 13 teams and five spots to fill. Despite what the standings say, theres not much need to wonder about the Twins and Indians. Theyre pulling up the rear of the A.L. wild-card standings and remain in the race only because the Red Sox, Yankees and Angels arent as good as they were last year. The Padres and Diamondbacks still have hope only because someone has to represent the N.L. West. The remaining nine teams, however, are legitimate threats and should stay in the chase until October.

The hearing for Michael Todd Smith, 32, was delayed because the county district attorneys office has not filed formal charges. Smith is the owner and instructor at T-Kanes Kung-Fu and Karate in Livermore. He was arrested on suspicion of two counts of lewd acts with a minor, which are felonies, and annoying or molesting a child, a misdemeanor.

Greyhound Lines has launched a guaranteed wheelchair-lift bus service to provide travel for mobility-impaired passengers in all 4,000 communities, including Central Pennsylvania, served by Greyhound. In a recent news release, Greyhound President and CEO Craig Lentzsch said this service will be available in the fourth quarter of 1999, three years earlier than required by proposed federal regulations. “We will guarantee travel by a bus equipped with a wheelchair lift between any two points in the intercity bus network to anyone who requests the service 48 hours in advance,” Lentzsch said.
Few people know what its like to leap from the minor league to the majors. Michael Stewart does. No, the 34-year-old isnt a famous athlete. An entrepreneurial success story, the hard-working Stewart made the jump from selling cars to repairing and refurbishing buses and trucks. After two years of selling BMWs and Volvos for someone else, Stewart decided to strike out on his own in 1988. He began modestly with auto dealing, the vehicular version of a face-lift. “I always did that before I sold cars to my customers,” says Steward, adding that he leveraged $5,000 in personal savings to secure a $10,000 line of credit to buy a steam cleaner, two buffers and renovate an office. A year after opening World Class, Steward found himself doing a lot more than car detailing. “A truck dealer, 10 blocks from my business, asked me to clean the dust off an 18-wheeler,” Stewart recalls. “One thing led to another and I started detailing his trucks.” The transition wasnt easy. “When we started, it took two of us three days to do one truck. Now one of us can do it in eight hours.”
